Tourism under Attack in Kerry – Public Meeting

Press Release from the Irish Self-Catering Federation

For Release: – Tuesday 21/02/2023

Heading.    Tourism under Attack in Kerry – Public Meeting

The ISCF along with our Tourism colleagues are asking for the VAT rate to be retained which will help with Tourism this summer however the underline problem is lack of Tourism accommodation. The minister for Tourism Catherine Martin stated at the launch of the Register for STTL Bill that it would close down 12,000 Self Catering holiday houses.

The Irish Self-Catering Federation is holding a public meeting for all those working in tourism at 7pm on Monday 27th February in the Gleneagle Hotel, Killarney. This is to address the lack of support from Government for the tourism industry.

At a round table meeting on 16/02 between the Department of Tourism, Failte Ireland, the Department of Housing and the ISCF we spoke of the fear caused in Kerry by the lack of guidelines for council planners and owners in Rent Pressure Zones. The ISCF members explained why Self-Catering should be allowed to continue in RPZs. We brought detail of the recommendations to this meeting. We advised that outside RPZs no planning requirements should be imposed on Self-Catering businesses.

Under the new bill self-catering businesses will now have to apply for planning permission even though there is a lack of clarity on planning nationally.  In Kerry enforcement orders are being taken against STR owners – we will explain why it’s impossible to get planning permission in Kerry!

The whole tourism infrastructure in Kerry is under threat due to a lack of holiday accommodation. With fewer guests staying in the county the tourist economy will suffer and jobs in shops, restaurants, pubs, activity providers, visitors attractions, golf courses and all the other tourism providers in the area will be affected.

This meeting is open to all working in tourism in Kerry. We need to send a clear message to the Government that tourism in rural Ireland needs to be protected.
