What’s happening? The Irish Government is preparing a Short-Term Letting & Tourism Bill that will:
· Introduce a mandatory register for short-term lets (up to 21 nights), managed by Fáilte Ireland, effective 20 May 2026
· Force planning permission or bans on self-catering in towns with populations over 10,000 and allow restrictions in smaller rural areas.
· Risk closure of many self-catering properties by May 2026, potentially undermining local tourism and rural economies.
How self-catering helps local communities:
· It spreads tourist spending into rural businesses—cafés, farm shops, guides, artisans.
· Families appreciate the flexibility—home-cooked meals, bringing pets, group space.
· It supports authentic travel—guests meet producers, try local food, enjoy unique experiences.
Your Voice Matters!
