Irish Self-Catering Federation warns of Aer Lingus strike impact
The Irish Self-Catering Federation, (ISCF) which represents the owners of 6,500 units nationwide, is warning that the Aer Lingus work to rule, which is entering its third week, risks throwing the self-catering sector into turmoil. Máire Ni Mhurchú the ISCF Chief Executive has warned that the industrial action will also damage trade from Europe unless it is resolved.
“If the Aer Lingus pilots action continues the cancellation of self-catering bookings will increase, as individual owners and marketing agents receive increasing cancellations,” Máire Ní Mhurchú said.
“As the cost of Ryanair flights has gone up, due to demand, there is less likelihood of bookings from EU countries for the rest of the season,” she said, adding that the knock-on impact means that “there is availability at short notice for summer bookings in the self-catering sector due to the cancellations.”
“The season to date has been very sluggish with few domestic bookings and many cancellations from the international markets, especially Germany and France,” Máire Ní Mhurchú concluded.
